Deafness in general practice measured by a screening audiometer.

چکیده
OF THE many diagnostic instruments now available to the practitioner none is so satisfactory to use as the audiometer. Antibiotics and the affluent society may be responsible for the virtual disappearance of acute mastoiditis in children as seen by the general practitioner in south-east England, but deafness is still common in adolescents. A child who has apparently recovered from acute otitis media may still be deafand not realize it. Removing debris from the external auditory meatus in children can be time consuming, and inspection of the tympanic membrane may not be complete. Testing for deafness in the surgery by whispering can be inaccurate and if a watch is used low frequency deafness might be missed. The opinion of a mother who thinks her child is deaf is of the greatest importance. However, mothers can sometimes be wrong:

Results obtained with a low cost software-based audiometer for hearing screening.
INTRODUCTION The implementation of hearing screening programs can be facilitated by reducing operating costs, including the cost of equipment. The Telessaúde (TS) audiometer is a low-cost, software-based, and easy-to-use piece of equipment for conducting audiometric screening. AIM To evaluate the TS audiometer for conducting audiometric screening. METHODS A prospective randomized study w...

The aim of screening is to decrease or remove the effect of hearing impairment on development of speech and language by timely diagnosis and effective treatment. A number of risk factors lead to delayed start of decreased hearing ability including: 1. Congenital infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) viru...

Mv own interest in these conditions commenced when I met James Seymour at the Middlesex Hospital six years ago. The stimulus which he gave me then has been the major factor in producing this paper to,night. Seymour, six years ago, knew from his clinical association with the late Garnett Passe (1945, 1951, 1953) that certain labyrinthine disorders responded to local vasodilation-either by drugs,...
متن کاملPure tone audiometry: comparison of general practice and hospital services.
Pure tone audiometry was obtained for both ears of 32 children by a general practitioner using a simple audiometer in his surgery, and by audiometricians in a hospital department on the same day. Comparing the worst hearing threshold at any of the three tested frequencies, the general practitioner did not find any ears to hear more than 10 dB better than the hospital (no false negatives). Howev...
متن کاملHearing screening for school children: comparison of low-cost, computer-based and conventional audiometry.
BACKGROUND There is a need to develop affordable but effective audiometric screening equipment, particularly for use in low-income countries. With advances in computer technology, low-cost computer-based audiometer software has been developed. However, the efficacy of computer-based audiometers in hearing screening and diagnostic assessment requires investigation. The purpose of this study was ...
